I can't cook! I never have been able to, and never will be able to! I'm just not good at it. I hear people say this all the time. It's a perfect example of a fixed mindset. Cooking is a skill. It can be learnt. Anybody can learn to cook.

We've all got that something that we think we're not good at because we tried it a few times without much luck. Maybe for you it's sport, tennis or canoeing. Maybe it's maths, languages, or writing. Whatever it is, it's showing you that, in some areas, you have a fixed mindset.

And truth be told a fixed mindset is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

While a growth mindset might just be your biggest asset and your secret superpower. So, whether you’re looking for strategies to enhance your personal development, improve your professional skills, or just lead a more fulfilling life, adopting a growth mindset can be a game-changer. THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MINDSET

Psychologists have been trying to work out what makes one person successful and another not. What is the secret sauce, and can we all have some, please? There are many answers to that question - you can read some of my other blogs to discover more about that and get inspired by ideas.

But one Psychologist, Carol Dweck discovered that our beliefs play a huge role in our ability to succeed. After studying thousands of school students, Dweck noticed that our beliefs around success and failure determine what we do when we fail and how much effort we're prepared to put into learning new things and growing as individuals. She coined the terms growth and fixed mindset, to sum up those beliefs.



What is a Growth Mindset?

A growth mindset is the belief that your intelligence, basic qualities and abilities can be developed with effort, learning, and persistence. Having a growth mindset means you focus on learning and developing your abilities because innate qualities and abilities are limited while learning and development is limitless.

With this mindset, anything is possible through hard work and determination. Failure is not a quality of your identity but a necessary part of the learning process. Challenges help you to grow and learn. Overcoming challenges helps you thrive and build confidence.

With confidence comes self-efficacy, and now you're on a roll with the wind in your sails.


What is a Fixed Mindset?

In contrast, we have a fixed mindset, where people believe their talents and intelligence are static and unchangeable. A fixed mindset views skills and qualities as unchangeable. I can't cook. I can't ski. This limiting mindset starts to create an identity around your inabilities, inadequacies and limitations.

Instead of the hard work and personal development that leads to confidence and self-efficacy, we use other tactics to overcome the low self-efficacy and self-worth that our beliefs cause.

Instead of seeing a way out, a way up, we see blocks, unfairness and dead ends. Challenges become insurmountable obstacles in our way instead of opportunities to take ourselves to the next level.

Not only are we unable to grow and evolve, but people with fixed mindsets are constantly trying to prove that they are good enough. Resonate? Many of us, deep down, feel like we're not good enough. But not good enough suggests we're unable to grow and evolve and change who we are.

Instead, we're left trying to prove ourselves or get one over other people. Constantly looking for outside validation and feeling like the world is unjust.

FIXED AND GROWTH MINDSETS

In truth, we're not all one or the other. Many of our beliefs are subconscious. We may have a growth mindset in some areas but not others. For example, a student may have a growth mindset in maths but a fixed mindset in sports. They know that they can have a good stab at any math equation, and if they don't get it, they will learn and eventually master it. But when it comes to sport, they've ruled out every sport because they're not sporty.

I always tell people there's a sport for everyone. I have a few people in my life who would have said they weren't sporty when they were young, but as adults, they learnt to ski, and they're brilliant skiers. That led them to try other sports, and gradually, their fixed mindsets in sports became a growth mindset in sports.


WHY IS A GROWTH MINDSET IMPORTANT?

Our mindset, whether fixed or growth, has a profound impact on our lives and our identity. If you find yourself leaning towards a more fixed mindset, shifting towards a growth mindset could be a monumental game changer for you. A fixed mindset, by its very nature, imposes limits on your life in numerous ways, hindering your potential for growth and development.

A growth mindset is like a key that unlocks the door to endless possibilities. It not only embraces life and its challenges but propels us to uncharted territories. While it's impossible to fully encapsulate its potential, a growth mindset can catapult your career to new heights, expand your social circle to the farthest reaches, infuse your physical health with boundless energy, and delve your wisdom to profound depths.

On the other hand, a fixed mindset is a self-fulfilling prophecy and only leads us to dead ends, stagnation and wilting.

  2. Learn from Criticism: Feedback is a gift. Use it to identify areas where you can improve rather than seeing it as a personal attack.

  3. Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results: Focus on the process and the effort you put in, not just the outcome. This helps reinforce the idea that improvement comes from hard work.

  4. Basic abilities create great foundations: Build on the smallest of abilities, little by little, one brick at a time.

  5. Give yourself a break: When things go wrong, don’t beat yourself up; keep a positive mindset.

  6. Stay Curious: Always be willing to learn new things. Curiosity is the fuel for growth.

  7. Adopt a “Yet” Attitude: If you’re struggling with something, add “yet” to the end of your thoughts. For example, “I can’t ski” becomes “I can’t ski yet.”

  8. Get comfortable with being outside your comfort zone: Learning new things can be uncomfortable, but remember it's just the starting point; you'll get comfortable again soon enough.
